Air Treatment Facilities

What does an Air Treatment Facility do?

Odor removal will take place in the ATFs using a two-step natural treatment system with biotrickling filters. The system uses naturally occurring bacteria that "feed" on the odors. Further filtering occurs in vessels filled with carbon that is similar to carbon used in an aquarium filter.  No dangerous chemical will be used.

The ATFs will be designed to fit into the neighborhoods in which they are located, both in their function and appearance. Each location will be different in appearance.

The site features, space availability, and capacity requirements at each site will all play a role in determining the overall design concept for each facility.

Interim Solutions

To provide relief from odors while these ATFs are being designed and built, the Bureaus of Engineering and Sanitation have

  • used portable and interim odor control units in construction projects that expose foul air for short periods
  • routinely injected odor-neutralizing chemicals into the sewer system to prevent hydrogen sulfide gases from forming

The overall results of these extensive efforts have been positive, but the ultimate and final answer to the City’s odor problems is the installation of permanent ATFs, which will be the best odor control technology available anywhere in the United States.
