City Sewers Future Construction
MAZE 5 Sewer Rehabilitation Project
The City’s major sewer system that serves Baldwin Hills, the Crenshaw District and Leimert Park, called the MAZE, has been undergoing repairs since the mid-1990s to correct decades of pipeline deterioration. Approximately 80% of the MAZE project has already been repaired. MAZE 5 is the final portion of MAZE that will be restored to keep area neighborhoods and business districts safe and healthy, reduce odors, and prevent spills.
MAZE 5 work will involve cleaning and then relining the existing sewer
with. new, high-strength pipe so it will
be able to reliably collect wastewater from the local community for
the next 100 years. Most work will be concentrated at construction pits
and maintenance holes, junction structures, and local sewer tie-ins
to reduce impacts to neighbors. Construction could take place at each
of these locations for several months, depending upon the complexity
of the work.

Construction
- Construction period: late 2009 to spring 2012
- The new sewer pipe will be slip-lined through the existing sewer from construction pits and various maintenance holes
- 8,500 feet of 42-75 inch diameter pipe plus local sewers
- Contract amount: $15 million – paid for by sewer service charges (included in your water bills)
- Construction managed by City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Engineering, Wastewater Conveyance Construction Division
Potential Impacts and Mitigation
- Working in close proximity to residences, businesses, schools and cars
New construction technology - “winding” the new lining into the sewer at selected locations will minimize traffic and community impacts; work hours will be restricted to 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. most days; safety enclosures will be placed around all excavation
- Commuters, churches, small businesses; loss of street parking; access to some driveways
Safe and adequate pedestrian and vehicle access will be maintained at all times to residences, businesses, service organizations and fire hydrants
- Construction noise, temporary dust and debris
Use low noise-generating equipment and/or sound barriers; daily street sweeping
- Odors from opening up a live sewer
Odor control devices and/or chemicals will be used to control potential odors
