City Sewers Current Construction

Lincoln Boulevard and Sunset Avenue Sewer Replacement Project

In April 2007 the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works will begin work on a project to remove and replace approximately 5,400 feet of old sewer pipes in the Venice area. Work will take place in the area bounded by Lincoln Boulevard to the southwest, Commonwealth Avenue to the northwest, Frederick Avenue to the northeast, and Sunset Avenue to the southeast.

The sewers, built in the 1930s, have deteriorated and been the cause of three sewage spills that required emergency repairs. Replacement of the faulty pipes will improve sewer flows and reduce maintenance. Although the pipes are small – only 6-inches in diameter – they are important because they connect to larger pipes that carry wastewater to the Hyperion Treatment Plant in Playa del Rey, where it is treated to a high quality before being released into Santa Monica Bay.

QUICK FACTS
  • Approximately 5,400 linear feet of 6-inch diameter sewer pipe will be replaced with 8-inch pipe.
  • 22 existing maintenance holes will be removed and replaced.
  • 160 private sewer lines from area homes will be reconnected to the new sewer pipes.
  • Construction period: April 2007 through late spring or early summer 2008.
  • Construction will generally take place Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m..
  • Estimated Cost: $1,608,000.
  • The construction method will be performed by “open cut” (trenching). This method is typically used where sewers are shallow.
  • In order to minimize disruption on area streets or alleys, each stretch of sewer pipe to be replaced will be about 250 feet in length and will only take about one to two weeks to complete.
  • Trucks and other equipment will be used during construction.
  • Enclosures or other barriers will be used in construction areas wherever necessary for public safety.
  • Trash pickup, deliveries to businesses, and access to alleyway garages will be maintained.
  • Parking may be temporarily restricted in some areas.
  • Flaggers will be used where traffic is reduced to one lane. Traffic will be restored to normal when construction has been completed at the end of each work day.
  • Residents will be notified 48 hours in advance whenever water and sewer services may be temporarily interrupted, which is not anticipated as part of the project (unless it is an emergency).
