City Sewers Current Construction
Lower North Outfall Sewer Rehabilitation Project
The Department of Public Works is in the process of repairing a 5½-mile segment of the Lower North Outfall Sewer (LNOS Phase I) between the Hyperion Treatment Plant in Playa del Rey and the intersection of Centinela Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard. The old sewer is about 80 years old and closed circuit television inspections have revealed extensive deterioration, which has restricted flows and reduced the capacity of the pipe.
The project consists of three primary construction activities: 1) cleaning out the old pipe (completed) 2) lining the inside of the sewer with concrete to create a new, very strong surface, and 3) grouting (a non-toxic cement-like material) around the outside of the sewer tunnel to strengthen and densify the soil above the sewer.
The majority of the work is taking place inside the sewer to lessen potential impacts of construction (noise, dust, etc.) on project neighbors. The contractor is accessing the pipeline from three locations – a site adjacent to The Gas Company located off Falmouth Avenue in Playa del Rey, on Los Angeles International Airport property adjacent to Vista del Mar south of Waterview Avenue in Playa del Rey, and on a portion of the Playa Vista property located near Kentwood Court and Arizona Circle in Westchester.
