City Sewers Current Construction
Avenue 45 – Arroyo Drive Relief Sewer
The City is now building a major sewer that will be located next to a portion of the Pasadena Freeway (110), from Figueroa Street and Avenue 45 to Arroyo Glen Street and Avenue 63. The project will add greater capacity to the currently overburdened Eagle Rock and Highland Park area sewers.
Most of the 13,100-foot long Avenue 45-Arroyo Drive Relief Sewer is being built along the north side of the Pasadena Freeway from Figueroa Street and Avenue 45 at the southwest end, to Arroyo Glen Street and Avenue 63 at the northeast end. Portions of the sewer must be built close to existing residential areas to properly connect the sewer to the existing system.
In order to minimize noise, dust, and traffic disruption during construction, the City is tunneling a large portion of the sewer, from Sycamore Grove Park to Avenue 60. This reduces the amount of above ground construction on this portion of the alignment to five tunnel pits and support areas. The pits are construction holes where workers operate tunnel digging equipment and push pipes into the tunnel. Dirt is also brought out of the tunnel at these locations.
Open cut construction is being used along shorter sections located near both ends of the project from Figueroa Street at Avenue 45 to Sycamore Grove Park, and from Avenue 60 to Arroyo Glen Street. Additional areas are being constructed with the open cut method to install connector sewers: along Ave. 55 between Carlota and Glen Ellen; along Arroyo Drive between Omaha and Ave. 60; along Via Marisol east of the freeway; and along a portion of Avenue 49.
