City Sewers Completed Construction
Washington Blvd. – Flower St. to Grand Ave.
Sewer Project
The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works repaired and replaced the sewer along a portion of W. Washington Blvd between Flower St. and Grand Ave. Most of the sewers in this are were built around 1900, and closed circuit television inspections show that they have severely deteriorated. Along Washington Blvd., the existing sewers are located under the Long Beach / Los Angeles light rail concrete track slab. The sewer was relocated to make access easier for the City’s maintenance crews.
Whenever possible, the City builds and repairs its sewers underground with minimal disturbance to the streets and sidewalks. Two methods were used to build and repair the project. The first was a remote controlled digging and pipe placing technology called micro-tunneling. Most work took place in a construction pit that was dug near Hope St. A small section of the project was built using open cut trenching. The construction helps reduce odors and prevent spills in area neighborhoods. This project is one of many sewer repair projects being built or repaired throughout Los Angeles under the Collection System Settlement Agreement between the City, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Santa Monica BayKeeper.
